It’s often used as a metaphor for intense emotional stress and/or pain affiliated with some kind of loss.

Most commonly attached to a break up, but broken hearts do come in a variety of shapes and sizes. As a career coach, I work with so many clients in need of a new job, a first job, a pivot or transition and with that comes REJECTION. No is part of the process and nobody likes the sound of NO. It hurts when we are dismissed, dissed, blown off or pushed aside. We have all, at times been REJECTED. And no matter how strong we are, it causes pain and sometimes that pain can be so deep, it just breaks our heart.

I won’t minimize the pain one feels. The ache we feel when NO hits us is very real and a force to be reckoned with. Broken hearts are tough to manage and difficult to recover from especially when it’s from a break up or a personal loss. And then there is the loss of the job you have coveted, wanted, dreamed of and targeted with real sense of purpose and hope. How do you handle that?

You can take time to heal. You can take time to grieve. You can take care of yourself. You can find healthy distractions. You can find ‘me’ time and look for a ‘feel good’ activity. You can even consult some professional help. Either way – you must deal with it and figure out the best way to move on and move forward. Mindset will play a role in rejection and can help get you on the road to improvement.

NO should not only represent the negative. Remember the mindset. NO can also represent NEXT OPPORTUNITY. Look for that – It might take time, but there is always another opportunity out there. Embrace the change.
