I am incredibly blessed to work at one of the best research universities in the country. I am even more fortunate to work with colleagues, alumni, faculty, and especially students that, for me provides a meaningful 8-hour day every day. As a Senior Career Coach, the best part of the day are the students. They all have different needs, different issues, goals and objectives, destination points, but they all have one thing in common – A job, a career, a professional path that will hopefully deliver fulfillment for as long as they work. When you consider that we work for a third of the day, sleep a third of the day and spend the balance on ‘personal’ time, it’s a pretty important job and service that I give. My goal is that I contribute and add some value as they look for the best path forward. I want to ensure that they have a sense of direction and better yet, know how to get there.
65% of students nationwide, when asked, ‘what do you want to be’ or ‘what do you want to do’ respond with 6 very telling words; “I DON’T KNOW” or “I’M NOT SURE”. To be able to help improve their chances of landing well and enrich their lives is a pretty significant and worthwhile thing to do, and I truly love doing it.
As a second career choice for me, I was, in the early stage, concerned about lacking credentials. I have an undergrad degree in Photography, Art & Design. Not having a master’s degree, as all my colleagues do, intimidated me. And the more involved I got, the more I realized I have more. I have a TYE degree which adds practicality, common sense, a certain wisdom and most importantly, something that cannot be achieved in the classroom, EXPERIENCE. Yes, I have a TYE degree….Thirty Years of Experience.
