Working with students as I do, I get the opportunity to engage with them in so many meaningful ways. I mentor, I teach, but more importantly, I get to learn from them. As much as I can give them, they give me more. I doubt they are even aware of how much I get from them. They are young, smart, eager, clever, resourceful, savvy, and they are always searching for answers and considering what lies in front of them – LIFE.
I like to think that I help them with their career journey and make the path in front of them a little smoother and minimize some of the speed bumps. Being around youth is a gift. Not because, as the saying goes, ‘it keeps me young’ (it does) but because of the exchange, we provide for each other. We lean on each other. We partner. We share. We improve each other. We benefit from our engagement. We grow. It’s all good and I love every second of it.
I always tell my students, “I am your GPS. I am your Waze, your google map and I will navigate the path forward from classroom to career. I nav, but you must drive”. My job is to plant relevant seeds of reality in their head. Something significant to work with. Something that can help them take the leap of faith. I admire all of them. They move at different speeds to achieve the same thing – SUCCESS. They know they will have to work for it. I want them to know they don’t deserve it. They will have to earn it. Recognizing them for what they are as individuals is the fun part. Some require more help than others, but they all get there. I measure my success by their success and for that I want to thank them all for what they give me. 100% bliss, joy and pleasure. Thank you, students. Keep up the great work.
