Who can you trust? Who do you rely on? When push comes to shove, I have learned, the hard way, the best resource you have is yourself.

I believe there is no shame in asking for help. Hell, that’s what friends are for – right? In my business, many times, I reach out and ask for assistance from a variety of people.

I categorize these people as friends, industry friends, family and some are people ‘I just know’. It’s amazing how often they come up short. It blows my mind how insulated people become when you ask for something. It creates a disconnect. All of a sudden e mail becomes a convenient barrier. It’s a foolish thing to do. Either you can help or you can’t. Take the high road and be transparent. Yes, I can or no I can’t. Simple and, in the long run, it keeps a relationship on the up and up. Respond, communicate and keep it real.

I have managed to build a huge network. I have worked very hard to create a community of resources made up of good people, smart people, people that have the ability to help and be helped. The word community is very telling. It’s an association that should be able to rely on one another in a time of need. Practical and on paper – looks like a damn good idea.

I offer assistance to so many and never do I expect something in return. Job Search Therapy is a service I provide. I get paid for it and with the reward of helping someone – that is a fair compensation.

Besides, that’s my job. (Well – one of them)

However, there are many that get caught in transition. They come to me for guidance. They look to me for advice, referrals or a shoulder to lean/cry on. Sometimes they look to me for a place to simply vent the frustration of job loss and job search. And, ultimately, there is the hope that I can help them through my network, find a new and better place to work.

Whatever the request – I am there. I know of no other way. I love friendly referrals. It’s a good thing to do. It’s the right thing to do. I have always done this in both my careers. It’s rewarding to see a referral develop into something meaningful – especially a job that furthers someone’s career. It’s really cool.

What’s not cool……. Is when it becomes a one way street. Can’t just take – you gotta give back.
