What comes first is LISTEN. We have 2 ears, so pay attention TWICE as hard and think about what you are hearing. Before you react – Process the information. What does it mean? What impact will it have on you, your objectives, your team and your job? Will it help you find success? What will the outcome be? Will it ultimately lead to results?

Before you do respond, think about the series of actions and steps necessary to achieve the goal(s) in front of you.

Even in the ‘heat’ of the battle, when the clock is ticking and the pressure is on, and you know people are waiting because deadlines are driving all involved, take your time and think about what has been said.

Let the information marinate. Make intelligent assessments and set your vision in place. When you have sorted through the information, now and only now are you prepared to take ownership and direct your point of view with conviction and offer a course of action that will, even if it causes disagreement, a meaningful solution.  So with 2 ears, we want to listen twice as much and with one mouth – offer a sensible response.
