Something that has been written about, talked about, sung about and something that can give us pause to stop on a dime and take stock in what we are considering. We often have thoughts about doing ‘something’ and as we do, we often pay attention to what that will look like, what resources we will need to find the right outcome and hope that we make the right decision. The tolerance level for all of us varies. It’s almost impossible to define that fine line as we all have a different threshold and we certainly don’t want to cross that fine line and compromise the results.
Networking is a great example of this. When we have a need, it’s common to think about the people we know, reach out and ask for help. Most people are busy and maybe they don’t respond quickly, so we try and reboot, ask again and maybe even a third time. And what if your resource now feels imposed upon? We have crossed that line and risk turning them off. The fine line can be a very small and subtle difference between two things. It means we must be cautious, measured to maintain a delicate balance so we don’t overstep and cross into the ‘negative’ zone. And as small as the fine line is, it can represent a huge and wide gap between failure and success. How can you possibly know what to do? We don’t. Finding the ‘sweet spot’ is very difficult. For the most part when you feel confronted with a fine line situation, take the pause and engage in your gut instinct as well as good old common sense. There is no fine line between common and sense.
