All day, every day, I see people scan their apple watches or wrist device calculating ‘their steps’. Criteria for the day is, am I getting my 10K steps in. I get a kick out of this because it seems to really be a major focus on their lives. I am not knocking this, nor am I minimizing the value it has. We all recognize the importance of fitness and steps can be a great way to help burn the calories, the stress we all must deal with and keeping the moving parts moving. I try to see things as they are and as they are not.
I exercise most mornings. I try hard to stay in shape. It makes me feel good and I know it’s a smart thing to do. However, in that context, I pay no attention to steps.
I view steps this way. How can I step up? How can I step aside? How can I step away? What will it take for me to step inside and have a seat. That’s what we all want anyway….A seat at the table. Sometimes I want to be strategic, so I consider taking one step back so I can advance 2 steps ahead. And, when I do, should I take the giant step or a baby step? Am I cautious or can I be a bit frivolous, careless, reckless or even foolish? If so, I can always counter step. Life is this ongoing process, which requires we take it one step at a time to ensure we are managing a step in the right direction.
I am not always in the same lane as others I engage with, so I will look for the ‘off ramp’ and break step, but I don’t want to overstep and cause problems.
When I get on my high horse, before ego gets the best of me, I try to remind myself, it’s time to step down. Despite not being the best dancer, I do like to get on the dance floor and do my best 2 step, and when I realize how silly I might look, I consider, maybe it’s time to step to the side.
I take my work seriously, so I try to step up to the plate knowing I will not always hit a home run, but I do keep my eye on the ball and do my best to step into it because I want to hit a home run.
At the end of the day, I think it’s important to step on the gas, pay attention to where we are going and be mindful that we watch our step.
