Typically, SHIP signifies something that transports, endorses and supports, which is why I like the use as a suffix in our language.

In order to be successful in anything today, yesterday and most importantly – tomorrow, you need to rely on the ships. The only way to get ahead, differentiate yourself, make progress, build your own little dynasty, move your life forward in a meaningful way is with the ships.
Let’s start with apprenticeship. The beginning of anyone’s journey is to be the student and learn from people who are more experienced, seasoned and talented than the entry level beginner. Be an observer, pay attention and learn what you should and shouldn’t do. It all adds up to a lesson that, if interpreted properly, will last a lifetime. Remember, paying dues should not be considered something bad. Quite the contrary, it is all good because it is EXPERIENCE and that is the best teacher.

Once you have become schooled and ready to begin your journey – you need to think about salesmanship, as that is the tool with which you market yourself. You are the brand and you need to sell that by offering a compelling story about yourself. What attracts you to the hiring community is the essence of who you are, what you can do and how you do it.
In order to get your message out there and develop a network to build, you have to create relationships with people. That is the key driver to getting your life moving. It begins with who you know. If you do this well you now have partnerships in place. Alignment with people is vital to the process of career sequence and career development. Know how to manage the resources you have.

Workmanship is your quality and showmanship is your ego. Make no mistake – You will need both to be successful. However, the most important ship is OWNERSHIP. Believe in yourself. Believe in what you do. Own what you do. Be committed and have the passion to drive forward. Clearly as you ride this ship and get your professional life directed, maintain a steady course and keep your eyes on the horizon, things will fall into place. Early discoveries were made by use of ships and this is no different. You are on a journey. The career path you choose can be exciting if you use the tools you have and keep your head in a good place. May the wind always be at your back.
